You may have already switched your oils in the kitchen for coconut oil, but have you switched some of your beauty products? Yes, you heard it right, coconut oil is an excellent natural replacement for many beauty products used on the hair and skin.

Use it on your hair:

Coconut oil has become increasingly popular for hair use, many are now using it to ‘fix’ their hair after years of harsh chemicals in commercial hair care products have left their hair flat, dry, and damaged. Coconut oil being rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients make it a perfect oil to help improve scalp health and strengthen the hair whilst adding volume, shine and softness, many also claim it slows down hair loss.

One of the most popular and recommended ways to use coconut oil on your hair is to use it as a deep conditioner. Simply pour a few tablespoons of the oil on the top of your scalp, and then use a comb or your fingers to help distribute the oil evenly from the roots to the tips of your hair (if you have greasy hair then you may want to avoid applying directly on your scalp.) If you only want to condition the ends of your hair, then massage some oil into your hands and apply on to the tips. The basic principle is, the longer you leave it in your hair before washing it out, the more conditioned your hair will be, so if you can keep it in for a couple of hours that would be great but if you can throw a shower cap on and leave it over night that would be ideal... it’s really up to you to decide. Once you are ready to wash your hair, use warm water and shampoo, you may need to repeat this a couple of times to get out the oil but don’t over-wash, you want to retain a (non-greasy) shine and softness!

Use it on your skin:

Coconut oil is an amazing moisturiser, it’s a great natural alternative to the hundreds of chemical based products available which are too often absorbed into our skins. The minerals in this oil can add plenty of moisture to help cure skin dryness. Simply take some coconut oil on your palms, rub your palms against each other once or twice and then on your face (if you don’t suffer from oily skin), hands, or wherever you want to see the moisturising effect.

Coconut oil is also great to moisturise and soothe chapped lips and as its completely edible there’s no worry about ingesting a little…in fact you may just want to do that on purpose!

One of the great aspects about using coconut oil as part of your beauty regime is that you do not need to get a hundred different products for different parts of your body, one jar of pure organic coconut oil will do the trick and a large jar should last you a while, making it pretty cost effective!
